This post is primarily to develop and support research capacity and programme, bring research funding, assist faculty and residents/students in developing their research skills including research proposals, protocols and synopses and theses development and teaching research methodology, epidemiology and biostatistics, research proposal development, manuscript writing and presentation skills. The post holder will be an innovative researcher with a strong record of getting research funding and quality publications in peer reviewed journals. Additionally s/he will design the processes and formats and oversee to promote assessments, evaluations and formal examinations (including entrance test) for postgraduate medical residents and will ensure validity and reliability in all the assessments and evaluation.
Duties and Responsibilities
o Develop research and related policies, guidelines, framework and agenda and work towards promoting the research culture, relevant to the epidemiology and needs of Afghanistan, sensitive to the cultural and religious values, thought patterns and experiences
o Work towards establishing a Research Support Unit, including the data management capacity at FMIC.
o Promote basic, clinical and public health and operational research in nursing and medicine at FMIC.
o Work closely with faculty, residents and other staff to help them in all research related activities, including developing research proposals, protocols, thesis etc.
o Develop linkages with national and international academic and research organizations, including with the Ministry of Public Health and Aga Khan University Research and Graduate Studies.
o Prepare policy briefs based on the research conducted at FMIC and arrange for their dissemination.
o Conduct courses on research methodology, epidemiology and biostatistics, research proposal development, manuscript writing and presentation skills epidemiology faculty and residents
o Develop qualitative and quantitative research skills to conduct cutting edge research at FMIC
o Works with individual resident to solve protocol and thesis related processes, including data collection and analysis, and related issues and to seek clearance from different approving authorities
o Ensure timely completion of protocols and theses for submission to the Theses Committee and to Ministry of Public Health.
o Develop research proposals and seek funding from relevant institutions within and outside Afghanistan.
o Establish repository for research projects, reports, protocols and thesis.
o Take lead in supporting organization of national and international research conferences for FMIC
o Oversee the overall research and related scholarly activities, facilities and capacity both at individual and at FMIC level to develop these to the desired level
o Work close with Academic Manager to coordinate research activities
Related to Exams Cell
o Plan, design and implement assessments and evaluation processes for core competencies
o Oversee the organization of assessments for cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains
o Develop appropriate assessment formats, guidelines and checklist
o Oversee the process and analyze the assessments for results including different relevant indices
o Be a resource to the Examination and Promotion Committee.
o Develop and maintain a question bank with the analysis of exams
o Conduct examiner training and item development sessions
o Oversee the formulation of exam questions and their review by the faculty members
o Oversee making exam papers from question bank with the faculty just before each exam
o Manage research and other collaborative partnerships with other educational institutions or other bodies
o Lead bids for research, consultancy and other additional funds
o Propose, plan and develop research projects
o Conduct research into learning and teaching methodologies and disseminate best practice within the Institution and externally.
o Serves as the custodian of Exams Cell
o Knowhow of polices and process related to bio medical and social sciences research
o Training of faculty members and supervision of students’ theses work
o Experience of developing research proposals and bring funding for their implementation
o Conceptual and analytical skills to understand research issues and problems requiring research
o Experience of working with national and international organizations with reference to research
o Well versed with students’ assessments and evaluation related theories, principles and practice.
o Familiar with formative and summative processes and relevant assessment tools and their utilization.
o Having past experience in the examination data management
o Masters Degree in Public Health, Health Policy and Planning, MSc in Epidemiology and Bio statistics from any recognized institution by the Ministry of Higher Education of Afghanistan.
o S/he must have at least 5-7 years’ experience in an academic or research institution and at least three year teaching experience in this field. The experience in planning and organizing student’s assessments is also required.
